Should I take the plunge on starting an Equestrian Business?
I am thinking of starting a riding school,livery,rescue business and have already sorted out the premises, the only issues are the premises hasn’t really ever had horses on it and would need quite a bit of work to get it ready.
The accommodation is an old house which also needs work. There is lots of grazing and plenty of outbuildings.
I have 11 years experience with all aspects of horses and have experience in business.
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should just go out on a limb and go for it? (Bearing in mind the expenses and work involved) Or am I crazy and should I not do it at all or should I try and look for somewhere else that is already set up for horses? (something which is hard to find unless you go to Newmarket and pay thousands per month.)

Start small to begin with.
A small riding school with prices that are lower than most in your area, will gradually build up a loyal clientele – exchange riding for barn chores with the kids that don’t have the cash – teach them – they are your future assistants that you can pay in the future when you are making $ and can grow bigger.
If you are capable you can take in a few FREE or low $ rescues that you know just need some groceries / a bit of re training – then they can join your stable and work for their keep.
Aquire FREE leases on horses that are well trained to increase your # of riders per class…
Stay away from the “rescues” that require $$$ to help – at least for the first few years as others have said – they will break you and jepordize everything. Remember to only help those that you CAN help.
It can be done! I started with 2 horses and now have 11 in my barn. 5 are mine, 2 are boarders that recieve reduced board for use of their horse in classes AND they do barn chores – and 4 are FREE leases.
All my horses were either rescues or donated to me.
Summer Day Camps make $$ too – I went from 4 kids a week to 18 and we are still growing – offer MORE than other camps at a better price and you will be fine.
Use your $$ to fix up the place in small stages – 2-3 stalls not 20 at first – 2 – 4 acre pasture not 25 at first. It will all come in time!
