What’s the difference between sable, dark sable and solid black ferrets?
I have heard people call ferrets the seem to look the same a sable, dark sable, black sable and solid black. Are they interchangeable names or are they different?
They’re all different colors/patterns. A regular sable will have dark brown guard hairs (the guard hairs are what give a ferret it’s pattern). The points (legs and tail) are usually darker than the rest of the body and they’ll have a mask (sometimes there’s only a slight difference in color between their points and body, but you can see a difference). The same goes for a dark sable. The only difference between a regular sable and a dark sable is the undercoat – sables have a lighter, creamy undercoat, while dark sables have a darker (usually an ashy color) undercoat. Oh, and the dark sables do have darker guard hairs than the regular sables (they should be black). Solid black ferrets are just that, solid black. They can have a light, creamy undercoat, but they won’t have the mask or the noticeable points like a sable does. They might sometimes have a little white around the nose area, but there will be very, very little white. Their nose will also be black. Those pics that Claudettebillie posted are good ones (the AFA’s color chart is what I always refer to), but that last one is not a solid black ferret, that is a black mitt. Black solids don’t have that much white on them.
